Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a versatile therapeutic agent. Inhaling H2 gas is reported to be safe and has positive effects on a range of diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we studied community adults of different ages inhaling H2 gas for 4 weeks. Fifty-four participants, three of whom dropped out (5%), were screened and enrolled. Selected subjects are treated as a single group without randomization. We assessed the association between total and classified white blood cell (WBC) counts at the individual level and the risk of AD after 4 weeks of hydrogen inhalation. The total number of WBC and the classified WBC count were not adversely affected after H2 gas inhalation therapy, indicating that it was well tolerated and that hydrogen inhalation was safe. Studies of markers of oxidative stress such as reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide have shown that their levels drop after hydrogen inhalation therapy. In addition, the evaluation of dementia related biomarkers, such as β-site APP lyase 1 (BACE-1), beta-amyloid protein (Aβ), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), T-TAU, Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and inflammatory cytokine (interleukin-6), results showed that in most cases, their cognitive status improved significantly after hydrogen inhalation treatment. Overall, our results suggest that H2 inhalation may ameliorate cognitive dysfunction in adults living in communities of different ages and that hydrogen is a good candidate for AD treatment.

Professor Korea Lee's recent research on residents in healthy communities provides us with a very good research paradigm, and we should actively promote the observation and research of the above various effects in social populations, which is also valuable for promoting the transformation and application of hydrogen health medicine.
